Tank transport for powdered materials: characteristics, advantages and requirements

Tanker transport for powdered goods is one of the most delicate services in our sector. In itself, the transport of goods by road is far more complex than simply delivering and collecting products that are ready for final sale. When it comes to shipping materials for the manufacture of such products, the conditions of our logistics operations change. But how does this work in the case of transporting powdered goods by tanker? At Conde Fernández Hermanos, we’ll explain it to you.

First of all, what do we mean by ‘powdered goods’? These are solid bulk products which, due to their characteristics, require specific storage, transport and unloading conditions. That is to say, cement, lime, flour, salts, minerals, chemicals and other raw materials can be transported in powder form or as small particles. This transport must be carried out using tankers specifically designed for such goods, as they keep the cargo contained throughout the journey and facilitate its unloading in a controlled and efficient manner.

As part of our logistics services, at Conde we offer a nationwide tanker transport service for powdered goods. We are therefore very familiar with the specific requirements of this activity. What do we take into account when transporting powdered goods? Let us tell you!

How do powder tanks work?

It is clear that, if the goods are in bulk, we cannot transport them in the same way as a conventional product. To load them safely, it is essential to use sealed, watertight tanks that prevent powdered materials from coming into contact with the outside environment. It is equally important that these tanks allow the goods to be unloaded. In many cases, the product is unloaded using a pneumatic system that utilises compressed air to gradually expel the material from the tank to the receiving point.

In our particular case, our powder tankers are either tipper or horizontal models, which allows us to adapt to the requirements of each logistics operation we carry out. What factors influence this? Well, aspects such as the type of load, but also the facilities where we deliver it and their dimensions, as well as the space available to manoeuvre the tanker.

Technical requirements for the transport of powdered materials

The most crucial aspect of transporting powdered goods in tankers is the technical requirements that each logistics operation must meet. Whilst it is important to ensure that conventional goods are in good condition, this is even more so for bulk solids, as they tend to be more susceptible to external factors that could impair their properties. And if their properties are altered, they will no longer be fit for their intended use.

Clearly, both the lorry and the tanker must be in perfect condition for the transport of powdered materials, so constant and rigorous maintenance is essential. Furthermore, it is advisable to check the tank’s seal regularly to prevent any leaks whilst on the road. Even if a leak occurs in an area of the tank that prevents the product from escaping, contact with the air, ambient temperature or rain can affect its integrity.

For the same reason, keeping the tank clean is of the utmost importance. Naturally, tanks are not disposable. It is therefore essential to wash the interior thoroughly to remove any residue from the previous load and thus prevent contamination of the new cargo, particularly if it is classified as dangerous goods.

Are all powders subject to the ADR?

It is important to emphasise this section. First of all, what is the ADR? The ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) regulates the transport of goods officially classified as dangerous, setting out specific transport requirements for the logistics sector. As it is a European-level agreement, it applies internationally, but this does not mean that we in Spain are exempt from complying with it – quite the contrary.

In our national context, the DGT specifies that, when transporting powdered dangerous goods in tankers, the driver must hold the relevant extension to their ADR authorisation. This is in addition to the basic ADR authorisation. This enables us to transport dangerous goods in tankers, battery-powered vehicles or units that include tanks or tank containers. Please note that the specific requirements depend on the nature and classification of each product.

Advantages of tanker transport for powders

Apart from the regulations that we must follow to the letter, what are the main advantages of transporting powdered goods by tanker? The most obvious and important point is that a tanker is the best way to protect a cargo as delicate as bulk solids. If we store powdered goods in an airtight, leak-proof tank, they will be protected from contaminants such as moisture and dirt. This means that the goods leave the factory or warehouse and arrive at their destination in exactly the same condition, completely intact.

Furthermore, loading and unloading using a tanker is the quickest, most efficient and safest method for this type of material. Not only that, but it avoids the need for intermediate handling of the powdered materials, further reducing the risk of altering their properties.

That said, at Conde we wish to make it clear that the transport of bulk solids is not just any logistics operation. Whilst the transport of conventional goods already involves an extremely rigorous process, this is even more so here, with these particularly sensitive materials. The nature of the goods determines the type of vehicle, the method of loading and unloading, the cleaning systems and, on occasions, even the legal liabilities.

What does this mean? It means that having a logistics partner with experience in this type of transport is essential. At Conde Fernández Hermanos, we offer a comprehensive tanker transport service for powdered goods throughout the country, with our own tanks for the dispatch and collection of goods. This enables us to provide a swift response to our clients in the industrial sectors, with complete flexibility and rigour.
